Title Systems Engineer Lead
City La Serena
Description Position Summary:
This position is based at the Gemini South Observatory In La Serena, Chile and provides
specialized skills to Observatory development and operations projects and activities in the area
of structured systems engineering.The Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for leading and
performing systems engineering tasks associated with assigned Observatory projects and
activities. The Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for overseeing and/or performing systems
functional analysis, interface definition, requirements specification, design analysis and
evaluation, implementation oversight, requirements verification, and transition to operations for
all Development Division projects. The Lead Systems Engineer will also develop and build the
observatory’s systems engineering infrastructure, identify and pursue opportunities for
operational improvements, perform knowledge management and engage with the larger
Observatory community to promote industry standards and best practices for systems
engineering and technical management. In both capacities, the Lead Systems Engineer will be
expected to work with a geographically distributed and multi-disciplinary team of engineers,
scientists and operators to achieve the project objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
● Lead and collaborate on needs identification, requirements definition and requirements
analysis, and perform requirements management and verification.
● Lead project configuration and knowledge management, including change control.
● Collaborate on project risk management and quality management.
● Collaborate on design and implementation activities including oversight to ensure
adherence to systems engineering best practices.
● Collaborate on integration and test activities including oversight to ensure adherence to
systems engineering best practices.
● Lead and collaborate on transition and project close out activities.
● Maintain a working knowledge of systems engineering best practices and application
within Observatories and similar environments.
● Become proficient in Gemini systems engineering tools and processes, and instruct the
larger Gemini community in the use of these tools and processes as warranted.
● Supervise and mentor junior Systems Engineering personnel as needed.
● Occasional travel as needed in support of projects.
● Other duties as required, within the classification of this position.
Job Specifications:
● Must have an understanding of a broad range of astronomy science issues and
terminology.
● Travel might be required in order to interact on a regular basis with Gemini North staff
and external teams.
● Requires flexibility and adaptability to work in a fluid environment.
Education Required:
● BS or advanced degree in an Engineering or Science discipline with courses in pertinent
fields such as systems engineering, aerospace engineering, industrial engineering,
mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics.
● Professional certification in systems engineering is desirable.
Experience Required:
● 5+ years as a systems engineer or performing systems engineering functions.
● Experience in both development and operations environments highly desirable.
● Experience in Observatory environment desirable.
● Experience working with geographically distributed teams desirable.
● Experience with industry standard systems engineering tools desirable.
Skills Required:
● Systems engineering expertise across the system lifecycle.
● Leadership and management of technical activities throughout the system lifecycle.
● Leadership and collaboration with people of diverse professions and background.
● Excellent written and verbal communications.
● Ability to easily grasp a wide range of engineering and science concepts and terminology
pertaining to observatories.
● Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments simultaneously and prioritize
activities as needed.
● Ability to build consensus and make decisions.
● Fluency in English required, and fluency in Spanish highly desirable.
● Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
● Plus the general fitness and safety language for working at high altitude, etc.

Must possess - sufficient mobility, strength, or dexterity in both arms and hands and both
legs to a) reach upward, sideways, downward to work with paper files; b) sufficient mobility and
dexterity to utilize computer systems, fax machines, copiers, and other office machines.

Must possess – 1) ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides,
and other written materials necessary to perform job; 2) sufficient visual capacity to perform the

sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or
shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to
impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately.
Must be able - to sit for long periods of time; to drive various company vehicles and
possess valid license plus a clean driving record.
