Title Data Process Developer

Description General Description of Position:

The Archive and Science User Support Software Developer will develop Python software to support the Gemini Observatory Archive and the gemini_python data reduction software suite. The Archive is an essential and critical component of observatory science operations; it is the means by which all science users, including Principal Investigators, obtain their science and calibration data from the observatory. The position requires close interaction with team members located at both Gemini North and Gemini South.

Essential Functions:

• Contribute to the continuing development of the new Gemini Observatory Data Archive system to store and search data from the Gemini telescopes. Specifically, he or she will develop python software to implement features required within an existing code base infrastructure, develop python software modules that are used by the archive software, for example for data validation, and develop unit tests for new and existing python code.
• Contribute to the development and testing of the gemini_python core infrastructure used by the Quality Assessment Pipeline and by the end-user Python-base science quality data processing suite.
• Follow a rigorous software development cycle from requirements and design documentation, coding standards, test driven development, and the application of quality control and configuration control methodology.


Other Possible Functions:

• Act as a consultant to external instrument developers as they develop data reduction software for gemini_python and assist in the integration, testing, and deployment of that software.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of the regression test platform and the integration test platform.
Requirements Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:
Two or more years of experience programming in Python and/or working as part of a team on a significant python software package is strongly desired. Experience providing user support and troubleshooting at astronomical facilities is preferred. The ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community of scientific software users and developers and write clear technical documentation is also desired.

perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses; 3) sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately
• Some travel may be necessary in or outside the contiguous United States.
• For summit positions, include:
Kitt Peak: Able to climb stairs and work at 6,800 feet altitude
Haleakala (DKIST): Ability to work at 10,000’ elevation, sometimes during inclement weather
Sunspot: Ability to work at 9,600’
Mauna Kea: Ability to work at 14,000’ for 8 hour shifts. Longer shifts and working during inclement weather occasionally required. Required to pass High Altitude medical examination (post offer and potentially at specified intervals while employed if medically necessary).
Cerro Panchon: Ability to work at 8,900’
Cerro Tololo: Ability to work at 7,300’
