Title Systems Engineer

Description Position Summary:
This position based at the Gemini South Observatory In La Serena, Chile aims at providing specialized skills to observatory development and operations projects and activities in the area of structured systems engineering.The Systems Engineer is responsible for performing systems engineering tasks associated with assigned Observatory projects and activities. The Systems Engineer will be responsible for performing requirements specification, design analysis and evaluation, implementation oversight, requirements verification, and transition to operations for new instruments and instrument upgrades. The Systems Engineer will also identify and pursue opportunities for operational improvements, perform knowledge management and engage with the larger observatory community to promote industry standards and Gemini practices for systems engineering and technical management. In both capacities, the Systems Engineer will be expected to work with a geographically distributed and multi-disciplinary team of engineers, scientists and operators to achieve the project objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead and collaborate on observatory systems and instrument needs identification, requirements definition and requirements analysis, and perform requirements management and verification.
• Lead project configuration and knowledge management, including change control.
• Collaborate on project risk management and quality management.
• Collaborate on design and implementation activities including oversight to ensure adherence to systems engineering processes and methodologiesbest practices.
• Collaborate on integration and test activities including oversight to ensure adherence to Gemini’s systems engineering practices.
• Lead and collaborate on transition and project close out activities.
• Maintain a working knowledge of systems engineering observatory adopted practices and application within oObservatories and similar environments.
• Become proficient in Gemini systems engineering tools and processes, and instruct the larger Gemini community in the use of these tools and processes as warranted.
• Occasional travel as needed in support of projects.
• Other duties as required, within the classification of this position.

Job Specifications:
• Must have an understanding of a broad range of astronomy science issues and terminology.
• Travel might be required in order to interact on a regular basis with Gemini’s instrument teams.
• Requires flexibility and adaptability to work in a fluid environment.

Education Required:
• BS or advanced degree in an Engineering or Science discipline.
• Professional certification in systems engineering is desirable.

Experience Required:
• Experience in both development and operations environments highly desirable.
• Experience in Observatory environment desirable.
• Experience working with geographically distributed teams desirable.
• Experience with industry standard systems engineering tools desirable.

Skills Required:
• Leadership and management of technical activities through out the system lifecycle.
• Leadership and collaboration with people of diverse professions and background.
• Excellent written and verbal communications.
• Ability to easily grasp a wide range of engineering and science concepts and terminology pertaining to observatories.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments simultaneously and prioritize activities as needed.
• Ability to build consensus and make decisions.
• Fluency in English required, and fluency in Spanish highly desirable.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
• Plus the general fitness and safety language for working at high altitude, etc.

Essential Job Functions:
Must possess - sufficient mobility, strength, or dexterity in both arms and hands and both legs to a) reach upward, sideways, downward to work with paper files; b) sufficient mobility and dexterity to utilize computer systems, fax machines, copiers, and other office machines.

Must possess – 1) ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides, and other written materials necessary to perform job; 2) sufficient visual capacity to perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses; 3) sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately.

Must be able - to sit for long periods of time; to drive various company vehicles and possess valid license plus a clean driving record.
