The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) operates several observatory centers (including the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the National Solar Observatory, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Gemini Observatory) in the United States and Chile under cooperative agreements with the National Science Foundation.

Gemini Observatory is looking for an individual to fill a permanent, half-time position as the Outreach Assistant. The Outreach Assistant will work with other Public Information and Outreach (PIO) staff members in promoting astronomy and science education to the Hawai’i island community with special emphasis on ‘Journey Through the Universe’ facilitation.

Essential Functions:

• Plan, coordinate and execute local outreach and educational programming in Hawai’i Island area schools and institutions.

• Provide logistical support (scheduling of classroom educators and ambassadors), promotional activities, etc. for the Journey Through the Universe Program.

• Plan, schedule, and assist with various outreach programs as defined by the PIO department. • Plan, schedule, and design outreach programs for the StarLab.

• Coordinate and plan major outreach events, both in Hilo and Kona.

• Assist in conceiving, developing and evaluating new education programs and materials. • Maintain accurate database of outreach programs and activities.

• Work closely with staff scientists and engineers to identify significant topics and findings for dissemination with the public. • Assist with summit tours as needed.

• Attend department meetings when scheduled.

• Attend MKAOC meetings as required.


• Minimum 2-year degree in astronomy or science-related field.

• 4-year degree in astronomy or science-related field preferred.

• Must possess proficient English verbal and written skills.

• Must have knowledge of how to use and maintain the equipment and deliver StarLab programs to students and the public.

• Proficiency in computer operation using basic word processing, spreadsheets and email.

• Previous community outreach and strong presentation skills preferred.
