The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) operates several observatory centers (including the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the National Solar Observatory, and the Gemini Observatory) in the United States and Chile under cooperative agreements with the National Science Foundation.

The Intern Web Developer will assist the Education and Public Outreach (EPO) department with various entry-level web development tasks. The position contributes to the EPO’s mission by supporting the Data2Dome community forum and developing simple astronomy data feeds along with collaborating with the EPO technical team in the design and development of the web portal.

Essential Functions:

  • Create basic JSON-based astronomy data feeds using the Data2Dome specification: http://ls.st/283
  • Help support the Data2Dome forum community, including discussions and planning related to astronomy media metadata standardization
  • Participate in cross-system design discussions to integrate the EPO back-end infrastructure with the website.
  • During iterative cycles of development and evaluation, you will engage as needed with user experience assessments, beta testing, and focus groups.
  • Monitor usage analytics and other evaluation metrics.
Requirements
  • Entry-level web programming skills (HTML 5, JavaScript, and CSS) and technical expertise with APIs, such as data access and authentication.
  • Superb written communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals remotely using a variety of technologies, including: email, phone calls, instant messaging, teleconferencing.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • 1-2 year web development experience.
  • Experience with source control (preferably git), online code management systems (preferably Github), and related agile workflows.
  • Familiarity with scalable, cloud infrastructure, such as AWS.
  • Interest in astronomy, outreach, and/or citizen science.

  • Must possess – 1) ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides, and other written materials necessary to perform job; 2) sufficient visual capacity to perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses; 3) sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately
