The Director of Government Relations is responsible for identifying, prioritizing, and delivering results on companywide federal and state-level activities and initiatives to influence public policy. This position will represent Populus Financial Group in industry organizations and before government officials, policymakers, and key thought leaders.

Major Responsibilities
• Monitor, evaluate and report on legislative and other governmental and legislative activity that may impact the operation, goals and strategies of the company, its products and subsidiaries.
• Proactively research developing government policies for changes that could be advantageous to the
company and what other trends might have a negative impact in the future.
• Maintain active relationships with elected officials to provide education and information that accurately
informs them on the operations of the company and how our products serve consumers.
• Direct outside legislative counsel practitioners and firms retained by the company, their personnel and
• Prepare periodic reports and presentations on government activities including bill filings, committee
hearings, industry actions, and legislative calendars.
• Form relationships with industry peers and companies to monitor their respective lobbying activities and
coordinate strategies and tactics that benefit the industry.
• Work with state industry associations to direct lobbying strategies and support associations when their objectives match the company’s direction.
• Prepare presentations, positioning documents and talking points for meetings with elected and government officials and their staffs.
• Prepare and organize grass root programs that that inform associates and consumers of the potential effects of pending legislation.
• Be current on all mandatory state ethics filings on registration of companies, company representatives, and lobbying firms as required by law. Ensure that all filings are made in a timely fashion and are correct and compliant with standing regulation.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs or a related field. Graduate degree or graduate level study a plus.
• 5+ years’ extensive experience in government relations, legislature, regulatory agency or public affairs required.
• Demonstrated ability to engage networks among relevant external stakeholders, such as legislators and policy makers.
• Collaborative, has a result-driven mindset, a high bar for quality, and the ability to lead in a fast-paced
• Strong, proven skills in analysis, writing, and development of effective public policy documents (e.g. positioning documents, talking points, letters).
• Skilled and effective verbal communication ability with professional colleagues, including strong public speaking capability and experience.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain an effective working rapport with a wide spectrum of personalities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position might require long hours and weekend work.
