The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) operates several observatory centers (including the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the National Solar Observatory (NSO), Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Gemini Observatory) in the United States and Chile under cooperative agreements with the National Science Foundation.

The NSO Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) Project has an immediate opening for an Engineering Assistant.

The Engineering Assistant will be responsible for supporting various technical staff in the construction and assembly of the DKIST. The person will assist the engineers in developing requirements, sourcing parts, creating Purchase Requisitions, tracking shipments, and coordinating deliveries to the summit of Haleakala. These parts could include electronics/electrical, hydraulics, mechanical, process equipment, pipe, fittings, controls and general construction products and components.



  • Work cooperatively with Engineering Leads to understand the deliverable products and coordinate timely delivery to the summit.
  • Work with the AURA Procurement Office to provide all information required to facilitate timely purchase and delivery of required items, including technical specification development, selection of products from to satisfy technical requirements, and completion of AURA purchase requests.
  • Work with AURA Procurement to resolve problems concerning vendors and logistics.
  • For local purchases, pick up parts and supplies from local vendors and deliver to project site.

Warehouse Duties

  • Coordinate receipt of shipments with various groups and vendors, and track what’s stored and moved to summit.
  • Receives inbound shipments, inspects, and logs inbound items, reports damaged items in accordance with exiting CAS Logistics process.


  • Responsible for Safety within area of responsibility, and for reporting any unsafe condition to the appropriate Risk Management office.
  • Normally 2 years of college in engineering or science, or the equivalent understanding of basic engineering and crafts. This may be gained by attendance at a high quality technical institute or by exceptional job related training or self-education.
  • At least 3 years of broadly diversified experience in technology or engineering support. Experience in procurement and logistical support would be a plus.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively, including preparation of material specifications/requirements.
  • Ability to cooperate with and obtain the support of others.
  • Knowledge of technological developments and the ability to apply them to existing assignments.
  • Varied experience/knowledge, especially in electronics/electrical, hydraulics, mechanical, process equipment, pipe, fittings, controls and general construction.
  • Ability to read blueprints, sketches, and other drawings specifying job requirements.
  • Ability to perform and accomplish detailed assignments with minimal supervision.

  • Must possess sufficient mobility, strength, or dexterity in both arms and hands and both legs to a) reach upward, sideways, downward to work with paper files; b) sufficient mobility and dexterity to utilize computer systems, fax machines, copiers, and other office machines.
  • Must possess 1) ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides, and other written materials necessary to perform job; 2) sufficient visual capacity to perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses; 3) sufficient aural capacity to hear and understand spoken instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately.
