||The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), located on the Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, MD, is the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope and the science and mission operations center for the James Webb Space Telescope,

STScI is seeking a Systems Engineer to support our Operations and Engineering Division working as a member of the Systems Engineering Branch supporting the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Systems Engineers working on STScI Missions follow the systems engineering
lifecycle from early concept and requirement definition, through implementation and testing, and eventually will follow the missions through closeout.
The Mission Software Systems Engineer will be responsible for any number of traditional systems engineering responsibilities, such as:
• Developing and maintaining operations concepts
• Requirements interface definitions
• Working with members of the development teams to perform design studies and guide design decision
• Interacting with the Integration and Test Team to define verification and validation plans for testing requirements, and
• Performing technical analysis to verify and validate complex requirements
This position will likely spend the first year assisting in the authoring of systems engineering analysis reports which aid in the verification of complex requirements that are not easily testable via traditional test procedures. Other systems engineering type
work and support of operations teams by troubleshooting ground system anomalies will exist. The systems engineer selected for this position should remain open to different work assignments, as STScI is a dynamic multi-mission environment with changing work
||Applicants require a technical degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics or a related scientific field to apply. Substitution of relevant education or experience for stated qualifications may be considered. The starting
position and salary are commensurate with education and experience.
An ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of systems engineering and software engineering lifecycles, a strong technical background, and have good verbal and written communication skills.
A prior background involving NASA spacecraft ground systems or operations is desirable and may be an indication of a strong candidate, but is not required. Experience in software development, operations or testing of spacecraft systems, or an advanced technical
degree will be considered in exchange for traditional systems engineering years of experience. The level of the position will be determined during the hiring process, however, is expected to fall within the mid-career range.
Candidates must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident. ITAR clearance is required.
