||The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), located on the Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, MD, is the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope and the science and mission operations center for the James Webb Space Telescope,
scheduled to launch in October, 2018.
The Operations and Engineering Division is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Science Instrument Calibration Software Branch (SCSB). The Engineering Manager (called a Branch Manager at STScI) will supervise and lead software engineers and scientists
who design and develop the Science Instrument calibration pipelines for the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. These pipelines are developed using industry standards and practices such as Python and Github from algorithms designed in
collaboration with instrument specialists.
The Branch Manager role includes the following activities:
• Recruit employees; assign, direct, and evaluate their work; and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competence.
• Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures, and enforcing STScI Policies.
• Coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directing the integration of technical activities. Analyze technology, and resource needs to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
• Participate in the development of standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed at STScI and implement them within the branch.
In addition to these management activities, the engineering manager will participate in the technical efforts carried out by the branch. This may include requirements development, software design, and development.
||Applicants will have a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, or a related scientific or technical field. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for the stated qualifications may be considered. The starting position
and salary are commensurate with education and experience.
The ideal candidate should possess effective communication skills. Prior experience in managing or supervising staff is required. Experience understanding and designing large complex systems would be beneficial.
Candidates must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident. ITAR clearance is required.
