Description

Post-doctoral Researchers in Milky Way Halo Studies

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is seeking to fill two postdoctoral researcher positions to work with Dr. Andrew Fox and collaborators including Drs. Jason Tumlinson and Molly Peeples.

The postdocs will study the gaseous halo of the Milky Way and the processes of Galactic inflow, outflow, and gas recycling. The positions will be primarily observational and will include analyzing HST/COS and FUSE absorption-line observations of high-velocity clouds (HVCs). The postdocs may also become involved in the study of the biconical outflow and the Fermi Bubbles located at the Galactic Center. Part of their time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas.

STScI offers a dynamic postdoc environment, with an active galaxy evolution group, a postdoc mentoring program, a broad benefit package, and a prime location on the Johns Hopkins University campus. The upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope makes this an exciting time to come to Baltimore. Between STScI and JHU there are many astronomers studying gas in and around galaxies, and the postdocs would join this community.

The positions will start in September 2018 or earlier upon mutual agreement. Funding is available for two years, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and availability of funds.

Requirements

Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, planetary science, or related fields. Experience with UV spectroscopy would be beneficial but not essential. More important is an enthusiasm to explore new ways of using UV spectra to constrain the workings of the Milky Way.

Applicants are requested to complete an online application through:
https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/39545

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, and 2-3 page statement of research interests. Applicants will be requested to provide names and contact information of three people who may be contacted for letters of reference. Applications received by December 31, 2017 will receive full consideration. Any questions about the positions should be directed to afox@stsci.edu.
