entry-level to highly experienced, in the following positions:
1. Research and Instrument Analysts (RIAs) are a part of the Instruments Division, where they primarily work on instrument teams and have responsibility for reducing and analyzing calibration data for cameras and spectrographs. They may also be involved
in development and testing of scientific instruments, laboratory work in optical systems, cutting-edge astronomical research with our science staff, science software development, optimizing the science operations and output of space telescopes, and providing
user support to our worldwide community of researchers on various aspects of observation planning and data analysis.
2. Archive Analysts are part of the Data Processing & Archive Services Branch in the Operations and Engineering Division (OED). Archive Analysts provide scientific, technical, and computational support in the areas of archival operations and archival research
to support the HST and JWST missions, and also data from other missions and telescopes included in the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST). Responsibilities include: monitoring data processing/archiving/distribution systems, generating metrics and
reports, providing support and advice for archive users (via a helpdesk) in searching and using archival data, creating and maintaining operational procedures, investigating and solving problems related to data or database content, providing input to the archive
development and test teams, supporting distribution of data on various media to other archive sites and researchers. Experience with large database applications of archives, Linux, and PC computer systems and network applications are desirable. Experience
in operating or working with a workflow management system and/or archive is preferred.
3. Software Engineers in the OED Archive Sciences Branch work to expand and build innovative search interfaces, visualization tools, and data handling services for MAST. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of astronomers, developers, testers, archivists
or related technologies, you are encouraged to apply: SQL and NoSQL databases, load balancing and high availability, concurrent programming and performance analysis, continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), experience working in an agile environment
(e.g., Scrum or Kanban), web services, web-based data visualization applications, GUI design and development, working with large data sets and databases, server side scaling and load applications, knowledge of accessibility and security compliance, experience
or knowledge of the Virtual Observatory. Your participation in at least one development project of high or medium complexity level is preferred.
4. Software Engineers in the OED Commanding Branch are responsible for developing and testing the onboard commanding of the science instruments for the HST, JWST, and WFIRST missions. Typical task include: develop and test the scripts that operate the science
instruments, collaborating with Astronomers and Engineers to collect requirements, developing parts of the ground subsystem, testing on our spacecraft and instrument simulators, and participating in pre-launch operational rehearsals and training for flight
Python, and work collaboratively on both small and large code bases.
Successful applicants are typically eager to learn and grow in their career, demonstrate great versatility and teamwork, and are creative problem-solvers with strong verbal and written communication skills. They have a Bachelor's, Master’s or PhD degree
