The Space Telescope Science Institute is the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope and the science and mission operations center for the James Webb Space Telescope. The Office of Public Outreach produces products and services that are the backbone of the news, education, and public outreach efforts for the missions. The achievements of the office helped to make the Hubble Space Telescope one of the most universally recognized scientific endeavors.

This creative and innovative office is seeking an Online Graphic Designer to create works of graphic design and provide front-end support for a variety of electronic-based publications. Publications will reach a vastly diverse audience and will range from websites to mobile applications. Special emphasis is placed on visually communicating complex ideas in clear and concise ways, helping people to understand and be engaged by astronomy and the sciences.

Responsibilities include:

  • Create unique and innovative designs that serves a range of audience types
  • Create graphics, technical illustrations, and information graphics that helps viewers comprehend science concepts and information
  • Responsible for creating wireframes and other documentation to help identify website content and navigational requirements
  • Responsible for translating design documentation and motion concepts into functional web applications
  • Communicate and handle the consistency of web design parameters, style guides and visual standards
  • Work with content authorities to review designs for errors
  • Work in an iterative manner with project team
  • Occasionally serve as project lead
  • Keep pace with contemporary design practices and technology
  • Work with Web & Technology Team to facilitate and implement creative designs within custom sites and within content management system (CMS) frameworks
  • Maintain proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (PS, IL, ID)
  • Cross browser testing
  • Develop a fundamentals understanding of ADA 508 compliance
  • Know the latest on all web related technologies and innovations

To be successful in this role, you should possess:

Real passion for space related topics.

Experience designing for web-based platforms, with deep understanding of web development concepts and tools.

Proficiency with design software, HTML coding, and front-end design, UI, and Web IA.

Command of composition, typography, and illustration is essential.

Understanding and working with technical information while holding a diverse range of skills, including creative thinking, design, and craftsmanship.

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in web design, web development, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Creative Skills:

  • Fluent understanding of the principles of design and fundamental understanding of typography
  • Command of color theory and how to effectively apply color to different designs

Technical Skills:

  • Solid knowledge of CSS and HTML5
  • Experience with Bootstrap or other responsive frameworks
  • UI/UX knowledge and mindset & experience coding emails in HTML
  • Experience with third-party web platforms (e.g. Squarespace)
  • Understanding of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Understanding of JavaScript, Jquery or AngularJS is a plus
  • Experience creating eBooks is a plus
  • Experience preparing works of design for print-based products

  • Superb communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong teammate with ability to build consensus by actively listening, and giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with an attention to detail
  • Ability to adhere to established standards and practices
  • Ability to communicate progress of projects and maintaining an archive of work
