The Space Telescope Science Institute, located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, is seeking a motivated, team-focused Education & Outreach Scientist for our Office of Public Outreach (OPO).  This position will support public engagement and community outreach activities for the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as contribute to the NASA’s Universe of Learning STEM learning program. 

The Education & Outreach Scientist will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team and work collaboratively with other OPO and STScI staff and external partners to incorporate mission science, technology, and expertise into a range of products, programs, and experiences for public audiences.   The individual acts as a liaison between OPO staff, STScI partners, and the science community and serves as a scientific expert and participant in product and program development.  

The candidate may work in multiple areas of science communications and engagement. Examples include: incorporating astrophysics data sets into experiences for public audiences; multimedia and immersive experiences; online content; large-scale public events; engagement of audiences traditionally underserved/underrepresented in STEM; involvement of scientists in STEM learning and public engagement.


A Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, or closely related field is required, with two to three years postdoctoral experience and three to five years related experience in STEM learning or public outreach preferred.  Strong teamwork, collaboration, verbal and written communication, and project management skills are essential, along with demonstrated creativity and problem-solving capabilities.  Ability to work with modern astrophysics data sets and tools required.
