Description Post-doctoral Researcher in Extragalactic Astronomy


The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher to work with Dr. Marc Rafelski on observational studies of high redshift galaxies and their gas reservoirs. The research will involve data reduction, scientific analysis and publication, and proposals for new observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and large ground-based facilities.

The successful candidate will work on multiple projects, including (1) the escaping ionizing flux of Lyman continuum galaxies at z~3-4, (2) absorption line systems (Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) and Lyman Limit systems (LLS)) to study the gas in and around galaxies, and possibly (3) emission-line studies of z~2 galaxies using HST grism surveys. Independent research will be encouraged and supported.

Technical expertise in the following areas is desirable: (a) high-redshift galaxies and their gas reservoirs; (b) reduction and analysis of imaging and spectroscopic data (e.g. astrodrizzle) (b) observing experience with HST or ground-based UV/optical/NIR telescopes (d) programming in Python or IDL.

The nominal start date is Summer/Fall 2018, but earlier start dates are possible. The initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal to 3 years (subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding).
