Title Stationary Engineer III

Description The Space Telescope Science Institute is seeking a Stationary Engineer III to operate all mechanical and electrical systems and equipment of the Institute including start up, shut down, monitoring, and maintaining normal operations of same. Systems include: HVAC, building and Process Plumbing, Fire Protection, Electrical, Computer Room Power, Emergency Power Systems, Alarm Systems, and Environmental Control/Energy Management Systems. This position is third shift: 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. including weekend rotations.

Other duties include routine maintenance on equipment as assigned, and supporting Facilities in the other functions such as snow removal, spreading ice melt products, shuttle driving, and after hour security tasks.
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Monitors operating equipment, record readings of gauges, meters, and charts in log book. May require obtaining water samples of chiller systems and test, and treat as required.
2. Perform maintenance on equipment: makes required adjustments to controls to maintain safe and efficient operation of systems. Cleans and or adjusts HVAC systems, strainers, filters, traps, humidifiers, belts and filters. May require servicing Cafeteria /Kitchen equipment.
3. Performs start up and shut down of equipment and systems.
4. Troubleshoots electrical system alarms, and make necessary emergency repairs.
5. Operates specialized fire protection and detection systems in critical areas such as computer rooms and Electrical Equipment spaces.
6. Capable of operating switchgear in the event of an electrical emergency.
7. Must be available for overtime and emergency call – ins.

Occasional:
1. May participate in ice melt tasks, and snow removal.
2. Provide mechanical and electrical support for new installation of computer equipment, HVAC systems, and building renovations.
3. Provide necessary support for medical and building evacuation emergencies.
4. Performs other related duties as required.


Requirements

Qualified Candidates must have :

1. Working knowledge of commercial air conditioning, refrigeration, environmental controls and instrumentation electric distribution and service, and controls.

2. Ability to work on package chillers, cooling towers, air handler units, fans, and other mechanical equipment.

3. General knowledge of Industrial Water Treatment for HVAC systems.

4. Working knowledge of fire protection systems and general building codes.

5. Working knowledge of building maintenance.

6. Skills and ability to thread pipe, soldering tubing, and troubleshooting electrical system problems.

7. General knowledge and abilities for roofing, and carpentry work preferred, but not required.

8. Ability to operate material handling equipment preferred, not required. (fork lift, uni-loader).

9. Ability to perform manual tasks requiring a full range of body movements.

10. Ability to lift heavy objects up to 75 pounds.

11. Basic computer proficiency required (PC, JC Metasys).

Graduation from High school or equivalent or optional technical school training in HVAC/Electrical Systems. Experience: Minimum one year in charge of a similar facility, or five years of operational and maintenance experience in an industrial, commercial, or institutional environment. Note: Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for state qualifications will be considered.

Additional Requirements: 1. First or Second Grade Maryland Stationary Engineer License, or Marine Engineer’s License (3rd asst) preferred. Other State license will be considered. 2. Class “C” Maryland Driver’s License, with clean driving record required. 3. Successful completion of an EPA Accepted Refrigeration and Recovery Certification Program preferred.
