Interstellar Medium Postdoctoral Researcher
Applications are invited for two or more postdoctoral research positions at the Space Telescope Science Institute. The successful applicant(s) will work with Drs. Julia Roman-Duval,
Karoline Gilbert, and Karl Gordon on studies of interstellar dust and gas in nearby galaxies, including the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, and other dwarf galaxies in and beyond the Local Group. There are a number of potential specific projects. One project
would pursue a comprehensive characterization of dust properties in nearby galaxies using Herschel, Spitzer, and Planck observations. Another would focus on mapping dust extinction properties in low mass, star-forming dwarf galaxies in and beyond the Local
Group using photometric observations obtained in the UV to NIR with HST.
We are also interested in mapping dust extinction properties in M31, M33, the LMC and SMC from photometric and spectroscopic observations obtained as part of the PHAT (Panchromatic
Andromeda Hubble Treasury), SMIDGE (Small Magellanic cloud Investigation of Dust Evolution), METAL (Metal Evolution and TrAnsport in the Large Magellanic Cloud) , and other programs. The postdoc(s) would work closely with other members of the ISM@STScI group
(including Drs. Martha Boyer and Joshua Peek), which has broad scientific interests orbiting the interstellar medium, from dust producing stars to the gas and dust in the interstellar and circum-galactic medium. This research will involve working with and,
if possible, proposing for observations with Hubble, Spitzer, and ground-based facilities. Independent research in related areas will be encouraged and supported.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the post-doctoral researcher position. Research experience in the areas
of interstellar dust, molecular clouds, or ISM structure is desirable. Expertise in numerical methods, statistics, software, or simulations is a plus.
The positions are for two years, with a possible renewal for a third year. The nominal start date is summer/fall 2018 but earlier start dates are possible. STScI is located on the Johns
Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and has deep ongoing interactions with the JHU Center for Astrophysical Sciences. STScI offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI's pay is commensurate
