Description The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, is the home of the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) and is the science operations center for NASA’s flagship space missions including the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope.

MAST is seeking a Visual Designer to work with a team of developers and scientists to design highly-usable web-based applications for interacting with astronomical data. MAST is the archive for the data from over 20 past, current and future space and ground-based missions, including Hubble, Kepler, GALEX and the future James Webb Space Telescope. MAST archives data from nearly 20 instruments and provides a variety of interfaces and tools to facilitate use of that data.

Job Responsibilities:
• Work with the MAST team and the broader STScI team to design highly-usable, functional user interface designs for our web applications.
• Communicate and oversee the consistency of our brand, style guides and visual standards
• Create highly-usable, functional user interface designs for our web applications
• Develop a fundamental understanding of ADA 508 compliance
• Stay current on all web related technologies and innovations
• Work with the team to organize and perform user testing

You should have significant experience designing for the web, and preferably designing user experiences that solve complex UX challenges. The tools you design and help build will be used by a significant fraction of the worldwide astronomical community and the opportunity to work on these problems should be exciting to you.

You have extensive knowledge of web development concepts and tools and while you’re most comfortable working in Adobe Creative Suite the idea of diving into HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to make edits to code doesn’t faze you. Must be adept at understanding and working with technical information and possess a diverse range of skills, including a mastery of creative thinking, design, and craftsmanship.

Requirements Candidates require a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Design (and preferably in web design, web development or related field) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for the stated qualifications may be considered. The starting position and salary are commensurate with education and experience.

Technical Skills:
• Deep experience with industry standard tools (e.g. Adobe CS) is required
• Extensive experience of designing responsive, intuitive web applications is required
• Good understanding of the modern web technologies including CSS and HTML5 & JavaScript is required

Collaborative Skills:
• Excellent customer service skills; proactive, collaborative, and responsible
• Ability to work within a cross-functional team and handle multiple projects with tight deadlines
• Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in typography, color theory, page layout, and iconography
• Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to adhere to established standards and practices, proactively communicating progress of projects and maintaining an archive of work
