The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) welcomes applications for one or more scientist-track openings in the coming year to provide operational and developmental support for HST, JWST, WFIRST and archives (MAST). Scientist-track research staff typically
spend 80% of their time in support of the science operations mission of the Institute and 20% on personal research. With grant support, they can increase their research fraction up to 50%.
Candidates for scientist-track positions must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in astronomy, planetary science, or a related field. We are seeking candidates with interest or experience in space- or ground-based astronomical observations, observatory systems,
astronomical instrumentation, and archives. Researchers experienced with theoretical, computational or data analysis techniques are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must be able to cultivate working relationships and communicate effectively
within cross-disciplinary teams that spread across multiple partners in our missions.
STScI occupies multiple sites surrounding the campus of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore, MD. It maintains excellent computer, technical, and library infrastructure. STScI has close connections with the JHU Physics and Astronomy Department.
It is a partner in both the Pan-STARRS and LSST consortia. It supports the archives for Kepler and will support them for TESS. STScI has a research staff mentoring program and many annual training programs.
The diverse research environment of STScI stimulates and supports an international research staff with over 100 members. Their research areas include instrumentation, theory, computational simulations, star and planet formation, stellar evolution, the interstellar
medium, stellar populations, galaxy formation and evolution, and cosmology. Research projects often include other research staff, postdoctoral researchers, research instrument analysts and JHU graduate students. The research staff lead a number of annual workshops
and large meetings. They participate in the activities of the very successful office of public outreach. Research-staff members at STScI help formulate the strategic goals of the Institute.
Applicants should submit the following materials in a single pdf file: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae and bibliography, and a 2-3 page summary of current and future research interests, including a description of technical skills.
Applicants should also submit the names of three individuals and ask them to who will write letters of reference on their behalf.
STScI applicant portal will be activated on September 1, 2016. Applications received by Monday, October 31, 2016 will receive full consideration. Letters of reference will be requested by STScI upon receipt of a complete application and are due no later
than Friday, November 11, 2016.
