The Chief of Staff,  OPTUMCARE WESTERN WASHINGTON is a position that is intended to provide significant leverage for business unit CEO, while serving as a platform for a high-potential senior employee to learn the business broadly, contribute on a range of important strategic and operational initiatives, and further develop the knowledge and skills to take on broader leadership roles across time.   


Organizational Support, Communications, and Project Management

  • Serve as “right hand” to the CEO, influencing and communicating effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Attend many/most executive meetings, owning follow-up steps and progress reporting
  • Attend other internal meetings and take part in projects and initiatives as appropriate or needed in place of the CEO 
  • Own development of CEO presentations for internal and external audiences (content, messaging, etc.)
  • Create and execute on communications strategies that enhance employee experience


Oversight of CEO Office

  • Ensure CEO’s time is maximized by identifying issues to own or escalate
  • Vet topics/materials/agendas with internal participants in advance of executive meetings to ensure adequate prep and optimize in-person time
  • Prep/brief CEO in advance of important internal or external meetings; prepare talking points, gather data, etc.
  • Work with EA to plan/coordinate CEO calendar and pacing of key meetings across the year
  • Provide support for leadership forums through agenda and content development and preparation


Special Projects and Key Initiatives

  • Play central role in or run point on special projects, ensuring strong pacing toward goals and resolution of issues
  • Projects to be selected based on strategic business need and how well the work enables the Chief of Staff to learn new parts of the business, enhance his or her skills, and build strong relationships
  • Ideally, projects will be cross functional, have a measurable impact, and demand complex problem solving

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Cross-functional knowledge (Product Development, Finance, Ops, Marketing, Technology, Strategy, M&A, People Development)
  • Ability to not only see tasks through to completion, but to "identify" the tasks needed to move the business forward
  • Exceptional communicator, both spoken and written, with the ability to articulately and concisely filter and summarize for executive audiences
  • Strong project management skills, including risk and contingency management, ability to manage competing demands and set priorities, and achieve deliverables
  • Experience working in and leading teams in a matrix organization
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing senior-level presentations and reports 
  • Ability to work well across the enterprise and fostering strong relationships with leaders in Optum and UnitedHealth Group
  • Proven ability to build relationships cross-functionally and lead toward common goals
  • Solid judgment skills to balance and prioritize differing organizational needs and make decisions on business needs and group objective
  • Intermediate to Advanced skills with PowerPoint and Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of UnitedHealthcare and/or Optum businesses
  • Working knowledge of Ambulatory Care Services
  • Flexible in approach but able to be decisive
  • Able to balance competing demands and operate with a sense of urgency when needed
  • Highly collaborative team player
  • Discrete; trusted in handling highly sensitive and confidential issues
  • Able to operate with high degree of autonomy and to proactively seek additional ways to add value
