Summary: Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools. With the use of machinists' hand tools and manual machines: Fits, assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges using information provided.

Essential Functions:
Toolmaker I
1. Reviews die designs. Learn to analyzes how the die works before it is made. Ask questions when it is not understood.
2. Learns the steps of die construction and organization.
3. Performs general repair work.
4. Learns speeds and feeds to operate all machines at a high rate of productivity, while holding tight tolerances.
5. Performs different setups in grinding, milling and jig boring operations with help from the trainer.
6. Arranges layout of tool steel and related components on die set, and writes down instructions for drilling, sawing. Works with EDM operators by giving oral or written burning instructions.
7. Assists with heat treat and drawback of tool steel, making efficient use of oven time.
8. Assembles die using all necessary components from the given die drawing.
9. Checks tool steel clearance. Checks timing of die (cutoff to form). Checks slug holes and other interference’s and all other die related operations.
10. Documents all changes relaying information to the designers, so the CAD files can be updated.
11. Monitors the various die components needed per job and meets due dates.
12. With assistance by the trainer, tests own dies to ensure proper function and readiness for inspection by Quality Assurance.
13. Resolves problems on dies using input from the trainer.
14. Performs all duties in a safe manner, complying with the safety rules and regulations.
15. Maintains a safe and clean work area.
16. Uses Axapta software programs to enter time/payroll information, job information, etc.
Requirements Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience and Skills Required: Related tooling and shop experience preferred, but not mandatory, which includes the following skills and abilities:
1. Working knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods and practices used in production tooling operations.
2. Working knowledge of related safety requirements to include proper us of safety equipment and proper safety precautions.
3. Ability to understand, follow and issue routine oral and written instructions.
4. Knowledge of the production process and metal fabrication machines.
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
6. Ability to problem solve in the press area, with minimal help.
7. Ability to continue to improve die building process to save time and dollars.
8. Ability to problem solve.
9. Serves as a role model mentor for other toolmakers.
