Description Position Summary:

We are looking for a USCG licensed Mate to work join the crew of M/V RM THORSTENSON. The Master is in command of the safety and navigation of the vessel; overall responsible for implementing and maintaining the vessel policies. The Mate is the second in command of the safety and navigation of the vessel, responsible for implementing and maintaining the Captain’s policies. Applicants must possess USCG Licensed Mate 3000 gross tons Uninspected Fishing Industry with all necessary endorsements as required by the USCG and other regulatory agencies.


Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensure safety equipment onboard assigned vessel is fully operational and in compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies.
• Assign crewmembers to life rafts and manning stations during emergency drills.
• Assist vessel Captain in giving crew safety orientations at beginning of voyage and as required during processing season.
• Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies as directed by MHS and in compliance with company policy.
• Perform navigational bridge watches under Captain’s direction.
• Responsible for ship’s log entries while on watch.
• Prepare all other required reports or log books under Captain’s direction.
• Inspect cargo-moving gear, visual signaling equipment, and other related gear/equipment to ensure safe operation and maintenance.
• Communicate with vessel crew and office staff in a professional and timely manner.
• Attend company sponsored training and meetings as directed.
• Strictly enforce and uphold all company policies and support company philosophy.
• Assume command in the event of the vessel master’s incapacity.
• Ensure that Icicle Seafoods, USCG and OSHA safe work practices are followed.
• Oversee and participate with deck crew and deck operations.
• Observe loading or unloading of cargo or equipment to ensure that handling and storage are performed according to specifications.
• Determine geographical positions of ships, using lorans, azimuths of celestial bodies, or computers, and use this information to determine the course and speed of a ship.
Requirements Skill and experience required:

• Minimum 5 years’ experience as Mate of vessels participating in fishing-related operations in Alaskan waters.
• Must possess USCG Licensed Mate 3000 gross tons Uninspected with all necessary endorsements as required by the USCG and other regulatory agencies (GMDSS and ARPA required as well).
• Must possess excellent leadership abilities, including interpersonal skills necessary to foster cooperation.
• Supervisory and teambuilding skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Above average computer skills to include competence in Windows based programs.
• Advanced First Aid training
• Ability to problem solve, analyze information and evaluate outcomes.


• Physical Ability:
• Must meet US Coast Guard licensing standards regarding physical condition, hearing and eyesight minimums.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and random drug tests.
• Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up and down a gangway or using a Jacob’s ladder.
• Must climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs, or vertical ladders inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions as extreme as 30 degrees below zero.



• Work Schedule:
• 12 hours or more per day for the duration of the trip, including loading and unloading.
• Ability to work at sea for extended periods of time in close, confined spaces.
