Description Position Summary:

The Master is in ultimate command of the operation, safety, and navigation of the vessel, and is responsible for implementing and enforcing the corporate and vessel policies and applicable regulations as they relate to vessel operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensure safety and navigation equipment onboard assigned vessel is fully operational and in compliance with all applicable regulations.
• Ensure that all navigational charts and vessel documentation are current and maintained onboard the ship in compliance with applicable regulations.
• Ensure that vessel is in compliance with USCG manning requirements and that all credentialed crew have appropriate documentation to satisfy those requirements.
• Assign crewmembers to life rafts and manning stations during emergency drills.
• Conduct emergency response drills in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
• Perform the duties and responsibilities of Incident Commander in vessel emergency response situations.
• Present crew safety orientations at beginning of voyage and as required during processing season.
• Perform and supervise navigational bridge watches, and establish the watches for all credentialed engineers.
• Ensure complete and accurate ship’s log entries are maintained at all times.
• Ensure that all required reports and log books are completely and accurately maintained.
• Coordinate and work closely with Vessel Manager to optimize vessel production.
• Coordinate and work closely with Vessel Safety Manager to ensure safe operations and that appropriate first response, assessment, and aid is provided to personnel
• Inspect cargo-moving gear, visual signaling equipment, and other related gear/equipment to ensure safe operation and maintenance.
• Communicate with vessel crew, office staff, and corporate office in a professional and timely manner.
• Assist with maintaining regular communication with the fishing and tender fleet, as directed by the fleet manager and/or vessel manager, to facilitate steady availability of quality fish.
• Attend company sponsored training and meetings as directed.
• Strictly enforce and uphold all company policies and support company philosophy.
• Ensure that corporate and applicable regulatory work practices are followed.
• Oversee deck crew and participate in deck operations.
• Oversee loading or unloading of cargo or equipment to ensure that handling and storage are performed according to specifications.
• Establish voyage plans and ensure that said plans are carried out according to your direction
• Determine geographical positions of ships, using lorans, azimuths of celestial bodies, or computers, and use this information to determine the course and speed of a ship.
Requirements Skill and experience required:

• Minimum 5 years’ experience as Master of vessels participating in fishing-related operations in Alaskan waters.
• Excellent leadership abilities, including interpersonal skills necessary to foster cooperation.
• Supervisory and teambuilding skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Above average computer skills to include competence in Windows based programs.
• Advanced First Aid training
• Ability to problem-solve and analyze information and evaluate outcomes.

Physical Ability:

• Must meet US Coast Guard licensing standards regarding physical condition, hearing and eyesight minimums.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and random drug tests.
• Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up and down a gangway or using a Jacob’s ladder.
• Must climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs, or vertical ladders inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions as extreme as 30 degrees below zero.

Work Schedule:

• Must comply with workhour limits and rest period requirements.
• Ability to work at sea for extended periods of time in close, confined spaces.
