Position Overview

The Database Administrator implements and maintains various database platforms for the enterprise. Performance and reliability must be ensured at the database level to run business software. Senior Database Administrators must understand the physical and logical database concepts. They are responsible to perform database analysis, tune performance, design database schemas, and ensure the reliability of the database

Key Responsibilities

  • Enforce, refine and document database standards
  • Work with technical/development leads to design/review database designs
  • Assess and identify database server resource requirements
  • Develop and maintain data models
  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of multiple database platforms
  • Code, test and deploy database changes
  • Lead efforts to develop and improve procedures for automated monitoring and proactive intervention, preventing customer impact
  • Review performance stats and recommend changes for tuning database and application queries
  • Assist developers in the development and tuning of database queries, stored procedures, indexes, etc.
  • Participate in periodic backup audits, including test restores ensuring all databases and associated logs are being backed-up
  • Lead requirements assessments for backup and recovery
  • Assume ownership of database related problems; pursue problem resolution and root cause analysis
  • Troubleshoot complex database and performance related issues including after-hours and weekends to meet SLA
  • Install, configure and upgrade database software
  • Perform application related deployments to test and production environments
  • Perform capacity planning for databases
  • Document processes and issue resolutions
  • Analyze and resolve highly complex problems
  • Monitor and tune existing databases of high complexity and high business exposure
  • Use database management tools proficiently
  • Proactively analyze database implementations and provide recommendations for improvements in performance and efficiency
  • Implement operational automation
  • Provide leadership and coaching for team
Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (in lieu of degree – 9 years of work experience in Engineering and/or IT environment)
  • 5 years of work experience in Engineering and/or IT environment
  • 5 years of work experience as a Database Administrator on multiple database platforms
  • Demonstrated experience with computer or network systems hardware and software development methodology/process obtained through formal training, education, and/or work experience
  • Experience with design and development of multiple database engines
  • Experience with database schema design
  • Strong in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, replication issues, log shipping issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc.
  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention
  • Proficient knowledge of Performance Tuning and Query Optimization
  • Proficient knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands, Clustering, Database mirroring, Replication
  • Experience implementing operational automation
  • Strong understanding of how indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration, patching. How statistics work, how indexes are stored, how they can be created and managed effectively

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering or Information Systems
  • Experience providing Level 3 technical support
  • Expert understanding of:
    • SQL Server
    • Oracle Enterprise and Oracle RAC
    • NoSQL database technologies, preferably MongoDB
    • Designing, developing, supporting Operational Data Stores (ODS) and/or Enterprise Data Warehouses (EDW)
    • Cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure
  • Experience with sharding in a MongoDB environment
  • Work experience with Linux
  • Airline or similar industry experience
