Under the supervision of the Vice President, Quality and Innovation, supports the Agency’s strategic initiatives through management of Foundation support and other Grants and external affairs as well as internal special projects.

Primary Duties

  • Manages foundation and government grants and contracts portfolio, including prospecting, proposal writing and submission, and grant/contract tracking and stewardship in collaboration with Clinical Programs and Finance Department staff.
  • Develops community relations, and liaisons with foundation and grant officers.
  • Conducts research of viable private and government grant funding sources.
  • Contributes to Didi Hirsch external affairs, including marketing, government and public relations, agency awards and recognition opportunities.
  • Assists President/CEO with sensitive stakeholder communications.
  • Supports Clinical Operations and Medical Department staff with formulating grant objectives and developing resources to achieve them.
  • Tracks national/local/regional trends and developments in research and legislation around mental health/housing/social policy through contact with government, industry groups, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Assesses and develops an Annual Grant/Foundation plan, working with the Executive Team to set priorities and timeline for achieving decided upon goals.
  • Develops a database of funding opportunities that are in alignment with Agency priorities; prepares monthly management reports outlining funding outreach and progress toward Grant/Foundation support goals.
  • Coordinates quarterly review meetings with Executive staff to re-assess Grant/Foundation priorities, revise annual plan based on any new or emergent needs, and report on progress toward goals.
  • Supports special projects and special events, including the preparation of written materials, as needed.

Required Qualifications

These specifications are general guidelines based upon the minimum, ordinarily considered essential, to satisfactory performance in this position.  Individual skills and abilities may result in some deviation from these guidelines. 


To perform effectively in this position, the employee in this position is required to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Marketing or Public Relations or related discipline.
  • Experience with federal grant making processes required.
  • Advanced knowledge of general development practices in a nonprofit environment, preferably including experience in an organization providing direct human services.
  • Advanced knowledge of the competitive grant funding process, as demonstrated by experience with identifying and writing successful private and government grant proposals. 
  • Very effective oral and written communication skills; superior writing skills including editing for content, style and grammar.
  • A working knowledge of how to develop long-term relationships with foundations and representatives of companies that might provide support.
  • Strong personal computer skills including preparation of spreadsheets, word processing and presentation software.  Experience with donor software is preferred. 
  • The analytical skills, experience and good judgment to make decisions relative to grant opportunities.
  • A commitment to team objectives and Didi Hirsch philosophies.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs by acquiring new skills and knowledge.
  • Interest and knowledge of the communities of Los Angeles.
  • Current California driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the Agency’s insurance carrier.


These requirements are typically met by a combination of education and experience that includes an undergraduate degree in English.
