Housing Specialist

Expand Your Skills and Enjoy Excellent Training, Career Options and a Great Culture

Bring Your Housing Savvy to a Leader in Mental Health Services -- Even if You're Coming from a Different Background

Top five reasons to bring your career to Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services:

  • Experience in mental health or substance abuse is a plus, but this also could be a chance to use your housing placement experience in a new environment -- and learn our practice areas.
  • You'll support innovative and effective programs and stay current on best practices, evidence-based practices and whole person care.
  • Through our dedicated Training Division, we provide extensive professional development programs, in class and online; you can take courses during work hours.
  • Add it all up, and this is great opportunity to start building a rewarding career home with a leader in community mental health services.
  • You'll find a strong family-like culture here; people enjoy working together to help some of the most vulnerable members of our communities improve the quality of their lives.

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services has been a leading provider of community mental health and substance use services since 1942. Dedicated to serving communities where stigma or poverty limits access, Didi Hirsch helps more than 90,000 children and adults each year from 11 locations and 100 schools throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties. We are committed to excellence, diversity and opportunity, and our staffers are dedicated and enthusiastic individuals who make a difference in the lives of the children, adults and older adults we serve.

To excel in this role you will respond to crisis situations with a cool head. You may work with clients who are actively using drugs or symptomatic of various behavioral or emotional issues. You'll need to be calm in the eye of the storm, focusing on containing the crises and coming up with short and long-term solutions as appropriate.

More specifically, you will:

  • Complete client assessments; provide referrals for a housing match based on clients’ psychiatric condition, social support network, substance abuse issues, and readiness for independent living.
  • Document all services provided and maintain client files and program statistics as required by Didi Hirsch, contract, and or other related agencies.
  • Provide best match housing placement and assist client with interviewing for housing placement.
  • Interface with the related community agencies relative to housing for clients.
  • Gather/maintain available information and prepare routine reports related to housing placement activity including client placement and successes and challenges to determine trends within the housing market and ensure long term placement for clients.
  • Monitor housing market activity to identify trends and prospective openings; keep program staff apprised of new housing opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete documentation of services provided to clients, ensuring compliance with Didi Hirsch policies and procedures, state licensing, or other regulatory agencies. This will include preparing a variety of reports on housing placement activity for program, division and Agency.
  • Develop and maintain housing placement skills through seminars, workshops, or other forms of training/education.
  • Attend and participate in routinely scheduled program, division and Agency staff meetings.

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the Housing Specialist opportunity, you will have:

  • Working knowledge of the housing market and placement of individuals that meet the criteria for placement services.
  • Current knowledge of all job specific skills including working effectively with homeless or at risk of becoming homeless individuals, case management, crisis intervention, documentation, and multi-cultural and socio-economic issues.
  • Demonstrated advocacy skills.
  • The ability to:
    • Learn and apply Didi Hirsch policies and procedures, HIPAA, policies and documentation guidelines, and county, state and federal regulations relating to service programs for individuals and families with a history of mental illness and/or substance use.
    • Support the values and mission of Didi Hirsch as related to employment.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish, Armenian or Farsi is required at some locations.
  • The ability to utilize analysis, experience and judgment to make decisions within policies and practices.
  • Computer proficiency, including the ability to use the Microsoft Office suite and electronic health record (EHR) applications.
  • A current California driver's license, car insurance and a driving record acceptable to Didi Hirsch's insurance carrier.

These requirements are typically met by a combination of education and experience that typically includes a bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field with a minimum of one year experience working in a mental health setting with specific experience in housing placement. We also will consider strong experience in lieu of a degree.

Just as important will be the following competencies and characteristics:

  • Strong initiative and self-motivation.
  • The ability to:
    • Contribute as an active member of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment.
    • Present ideas, information, and viewpoints clearly.
    • Adapt to changing needs by acquiring new skills and knowledge.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including a proactive approach to gathering and sharing information with the team.
  • Patience in navigating complex public and private support systems and resources.
