The Director, Corporate Communications is responsible for company-wide proactive internal communications strategies with the goal of inspiring Calpine’s employees to do their best work everyday. In partnership with key leaders, this position will develop, create and organize company-wide campaigns and initiatives that educate and engage our workforce on the company’s mission and strategic priorities.

This position works collaboratively with executive leaders and cross-functional partners to tell the company story; develop the company’s narratives and communication plan delivered via digital channels, live events or a combination of both, and conducts research and analyses to understand what drives attention to deliver important messages to their audience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop channel strategies and experiment with new channels of communication to identify the best tools and technologies to employ in support of team communications, collaboration, and engagement, including intranet, blogs, and videos.
  • Proactively identifying opportunities and collaborate with Human Resources to develop communications vehicles to communicate Calpine’s value proposition with current and prospective employees.
  • Provide hands-on writing, editing, and production of content across multiple channels (e.g., articles, email messages, websites (internal/external), newsletters, presentations, podcasts, videos, etc.) to help Calpine employees understand what is happening within the organization while ensuring all content from other departments is edited, formatted and appropriate for distribution to employees.
  • Create and maintain repositories for Calpine’s communications and associated documents; build and maintain the plan and calendar of cross-channel communications and events across the enterprise and for various audiences.
  • Manage company and community events including all planning and execution, and work across all Calpine locations to support their efforts in planning and implementing local company and/or community events.
  • Manage department budget including development of annual budget, updating forecasts, and ensuring compliance with annual budget.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Manage department function with an operational focus and budgetary responsibilities.
  • Make decisions typically related to implementation of department strategy, intradepartmental coordination, and business outcomes.
  • Make decisions for large-scale projects, a closely related set of projects and/or initiatives involving multiple functional areas, which may have long-term impact on the department.
  • Work within broad guidelines; applying advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems using judgement and analysis, providing practical, timely and proactive communications guidance and support.
  • Collaborate with all levels within the organization to accomplish shared goals.
  • Provide support to President of Calpine Foundation to include all reporting, recordkeeping, reconciliation, adherence to IRS regulations and timely processing of charitable donations. Must have in-depth knowledge of charitable foundations to advise President and Foundation Board as appropriate.
  • Meet with charities to ensure charities’ mission and programs are in-line with Calpine’s Foundation Giving Programs.
  • Review all Corporate Contributions outside of the Foundation to ensure they meet charitable-giving guidelines.
  • Provide support to President of Calpine Employee Relief Fund to include all reporting, recordkeeping, reconciliation, adherence to IRS regulations and timely processing of charitable grants to employees. Must keep confidential records of requests and grants provided. Will provide all reports for board meetings when Fund is activated as a result of employees’ hardship events.
  • Manage any and all fundraising campaigns such as COVID-19 Community Relief Fund.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, prefer Master’s Degree with 15+ years of internal communications, corporate communications, and/or media experience (e.g. broadcast journalism, reporter) or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite
  • Exceptional oral and written communication/comprehension and expression/presentation skills; attention to detail and experience working in a fast paced environment.
  • Experience working across multiple levels, teams, and regions
  • Experience writing and turning complex information into relevant, engaging, timely and valuable content.
  • Excellent organization skills with experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, including events, logistics and various types of creative content development while working autonomously
